At
least 5 people have died and at least 20 injured when a strong 8.3 magnitude
earthquake struck Chile's capital Santiago on Wednesday.
This
has triggered a tsunami alert, that stretched to Peru and the evacuation of
coastal areas.
The
United States Geological Survey put the shallow offshore quake at a magnitude
of 7.9, and said it hit just 228 kilometers (about 140 miles) north of
Santiago.
The
agency revised the estimate of the earthquake magnitude from 7.9 to 8.3 on the
Ritcher scale after it occurred.
An
evacuation of coastal towns and cities has been ordered as a precautionary
measure.
