Rivers: Robbers kill policeman, snatch workers’ salary

One policeman and a civilian were yesterday killed by armed robbers in a robbery operation along the busy Olu-Obasanjo Road in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The 3rd person in the Tundra Jeep is currently receiving treatment in a hospital after being seriously injured with bullet wounds.

The huge sum of money, which was snatched belongs to Oyigbo Local Government council in Rivers State.

DAILY POST gathered that the money was meant for the payment of salaries of Oyigbo council workers, but it was still not clear how much was inside the Ghana-Must-Go bag.

Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Ahmad Muhammed, told our correspondent that a policeman accompanying the cash was killed in the attack.

Mohammed said, “the Police officer was killed as a result of laxity. We have always cautioned them on how to go on escorts. It is very unfortunate.”

An eyewitness, who spoke with DAILY POST said the hoodlums were dressed in a military camouflage.

The eyewitness stated that the four armed robbers drove a Toyota Camry car, but because of the busy traffic, they parked few metres away from the head-office of the Rivers Transport Company (RTC) and trekked towards their targets.
