Princess Charlotte will be christened in the same gown that Prince George wore, which is itself a replica of a gown made in 1841 for Queen Victoria's eldest daughter. Sian Ranscombe has the story of eight generations of royal history that are woven into the very fabric of these garments.

Crowds have already started to build in Sandringham more than six hours before the christening happens. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge invited members of the public to share in the day by opening a paddock for them outside the churchyard, which does not open until 3pm.

For the first time ever, the Lily Font, part of the Crown Jewels, has left London to be taken to Norfolk for the christening. It will contain water taken from the River Jordan, where Christ was baptised.
