Nigerians have started reacting to the proposed termination of the amnesty
programme by the new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
programme by the new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
One Osuman Eric Oseto opined that “The so called amnesty, how many poor people in the Niger Delta has it affected positively apart from their top men? If you actually go deep into the amnesty stuff you will see its those Asari Dokubo and their leaders that are benefiting from it”
Another INFORMATION NIGERIA reader, Eon May said “Why must we
continue to let criminals hold us to ransom? Amnesty for Militants must
stop, Amnesty for Boko Haram must never occur. All past criminals who
have robbed Nigeria must be prosecuted. No sacred cows”.

Frank Nero Ojo also supported the termination of the amnesty programme
as he commented that “The focus of the federal government should base on
development of Niger Delta and job creation, Training and technical schools
equipped for learning. Any person parading as a leader to disturb the peace
in the region should be bound in bars”.

Further on the comments, another reader, Charles Ojo supported the
termination of the amnesty programme and also advised leaders of the Niger
Delta people on what their role to their people should be, he said “No more
Amnesty, if they like they should start bombing. This PMB is never a father
Christmas, One thing I know is dat Niger Delta Elder should caution Their
criminals else they end up bombing themselves like North east elder that
never caution their criminals they end up not been able 2 stay in their towns.
Enough is enough for d wise”.

A reader, Ikoleji Oghenero who said she’s a graduate aired her frustration as
she can’t find a job while militants who are criminals are getting paid for
being criminals. She made her point saying “These ex-criminals have been
empowered, they should go and establish themselves to be useful,
government should stop backing criminals by a so called amnesty. Am a
degree holder I’ve not even gotten a job, why some criminals in the name of
militant collecting free money, its annoying, this should stop, let the
government develop the area and build industries 4 those who are able and
willing to work. Those who are not willing and lazy to work, that want to
cause insecurity should be wipe-out, because no one is stronger than the
government.

Josephine Philips, An indigene of Niger Delta gave a surprising contribution
saying “I am a Niger Deltan and I support that it should be terminated
because giving money to these youths doesn’t solve the problem of our
region, instead it breeds more joblessness and laziness amongst them. For
me I think these youth should be offered something more that would change
their lives completely, like offering of scholarships for those who want to go
back to school, helping them in learning skills, trading and the likes of it and
also creating more jobs in the Niger Delta area, I think with these put into
place the youths are kept busy and the problems of militancy
reduced.#myopinion “.

Yet another INFORMATION NIGERIA reader, Sola Omotayo gave a broad view
of those really benefiting from the amnesty programme and the reason for
the rise of militancy in the first place; “The reason for the emergence of
militancy in the ND is lack of government presence in the area. My question
to all is this; who are the beneficiaries of the Amnesty, the people of ND as a
whole or just few criminals that are calling themselves warlords and their
followers? Since the Amnesty program started, how many communities in the
creek are now having access to tap bore water putting into consideration the
billions already spent? If the govt wants to continue to bred criminals they
should continue with the Amnesty program. But I will prefer channeling the
money into developing ND as a whole instead of using it to enrich few and
encourage more youths going into criminal act called militancy. IS
MILITANCY A LEGALISE OCCUPATION?”.

More aggrieved Nigerians aired their opinion, one of them said “Amnesty Is
not a career! There always be an exit date for amnesty. Amnesty is suppose
to be a temporary intervention”. In the same vein, a reader made a
comparison between militants and NYSC members saying “This is nonsense
naa, buhari should scrap it now, how much is government paying NYSC
members serving the country? Why will criminal continue to have upper hand
in this country?”.

Another reader opened up as being a part of the programmed and went ahead to reveal that they are underpaid due to the fact that some people from above slash the money before it reaches them, the ex-militants, he said “Am part of this programme, we are suppose to be collecting 65k every month, but what we are seeing is 15k, Ateke and Patience Jonathan are just using our money to build big house, i think this have to stop”.
To end the collected opinions of Nigerians on the issue of terminating the
amnesty programme, another INFORMATION NIGERIA READER said “Amnesty
to me isn’t the best approach to solve the militancy. Do those guys think
about their environmental degradation? This can be likened as a rich man
paying you millions to be sleeping with your wife. I would want the new govt
to award oil blocks to host communities for their development. The
communities should come with their developmental plan and a minister will
supervise the funds management”.
