What has happened?

A referendum - a vote in which everyone (or nearly everyone) of voting age can take part - was held on Thursday 23 June, to decide whether the UK should leave or remain in the European Union.
Leave won by 52% to 48%.
The referendum turnout was 71.8%, with more than 30 million people voting. It was the highest turnout in a UK-wide vote since the 1992 general election.

What was the breakdown across the UK?

England voted strongly for Brexit, by 53.4% to 46.6%, as did Wales, with Leave getting 52.5% of the vote and Remain 47.5%.
Scotland and Northern Ireland both backed staying in the EU. Scotland backed Remain by 62% to 38%, while 55.8% in Northern Ireland voted Remain and 44.2% Leave.




Emir of Kano congratulates son on his graduation.

Ashraf Sanusi, son of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II graduated today with a degree in Architecture from St. Lawrence College, London. The monarch sent a congratulatory message to him via Instagram:
“Now you achieved your goals and will have a bright, promising career as an (Architecture). In my message I just can’t tell you how proud I am of you today! Congratulations and Best Wishes!” he said.

BVN saves Rivers state government N1billion.

The Rivers State Government has announced that it has saved about N1 billion through the Bank Verification Number (BVN) validation of civil servants ordered by Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. Also, the State Government has announced that it will embark on a comprehensive biometric confirmation of all civil servants in the state as a further measure of blocking all other existing revenue leakages in the system.
The resolution was reached at the State Executive Council Meeting held on Wednesday at the Government House, Port Harcourt. Addressing journalists after the meeting, Commissioner for Information, Dr Austin Tam-George said that the resolution would enhance the financial management of the state. The State Executive Council noted that the biometric verification will also confirm the actual population of civil servants in the state for effective planning.

NNPC workers suspend strike action.

NNPC workers, under the aegis of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, have suspended their strike action.

The oil workers called for a strike following the restructuring of NNPC by the Federal government.

NNPC reorganised, not unbundled – Kachikwu says.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation NNPC, Ibe Kachikwu, says the oil corporation is only being reorganized and not unbundled. He said this while speaking with State House Correspondence after the Federal Executive Council meeting yesterday, March 9, 2016.

"We have not unbundled NNPC. We had a press conference yesterday where I explained this. What we have simply done is reorganisation. We have five business entities focus on business: Upstream, Downstream, Refineries, Gas and Power that are there before.

Impeached Female Ondo speaker reinstated.

Barely 24 hours after she was impeached in a questionable manner, the first female Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Jumoke Akindele has been reinstated. The reinstatement came after a 5 hour meeting with the Ondo state governor, Olusegun Mimiko.

Akindele and her Deputy, Fatai Olotu, were impeached by 18 out of the 26 lawmakers at one of the lawmakers quarters in Akure, the Ondo state capital at about 10pm on March 8, 2016.

Woman hides 4 year old chld in bag on an Air France flight.

A woman who flew into Paris from Istanbul this week was arrested after it was discovered that she had hidden a four-year-old girl in a bag on the plane, Air France said Wednesday.


The airline said the child who was travelling with the woman didn't have a plane ticket.
According to AFP reports, the woman was a resident of France who was in the process of adopting the child who was from Haiti.
 
"She was apparently in the transit zone in Istanbul, and had crossed the customs checkpoint with the child, when she was prevented from boarding a flight with her," said the source. The woman who didn't want to buy a ticket for the child decided to hide her in a bag in order to board the next flight, after buying a new ticket for herself.

Yakubu Gowon accepts his 48 year old son after DNA test confirms he's the biolagical father.

The 48 year legal tussle over the paternity of Jack Musa Gowon, the love child of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has ended with Gowon accepting that he is Musa’s father after a DNA test confirmed this.

Musa who recently returned to Nigeria after spending 20 years in an American prison, is the love child born from a secret affair Gowon had with late Edith Ike-Okongwu.

 In a statement he personally signed and released yesterday March 9th, General Gowon said,

Lagos building collapse : Death toll rises to 34.

Thirty four people have now been confirmed dead in the 5-storey building that collapsed at Chisco bus stop, opposite Oando Gas Station in the Lekki area of Lagos state on ‎Tuesday March 8th. 16 more dead bodies were recovered from the rubble yesterday.

Meanwhile the number of survivors still stands at 13. National Emergency Management Agency Southwest spokesman Ibrahim Farinloye, while speaking to newsmen at the rescue site at about 7.30pm, said: “Operations concluded at 7.20pm with 34 dead and 13 rescued after reaching ground zero. Investigation on the cause of the collapse has started by various federal and state agencies.”

Man charged with killing girlfriend, then telling her ex via text.

A Montana man gunned down his girlfriend and then sent a text message about the killing to her ex-husband and others, authorities said Wednesday. Anthony Tobias Fagiano, 35, was charged with deliberate homicide hours after he turned himself in, telling officers he broke into Darcy Buhmann's house and shot her, police in Bozeman said.


Buhmann's ex-husband, Christopher Wood, called 911 to report he received a text from Fagiano that said he had shot Buhmann. The text added: "It's best for you, she'll never be faithful."

Police found Buhmann's body in her bedroom closet. She was shot in the head and stomach.
Fagiano told investigators that he took Buhmann's car after the shooting and went to the woods, where he sent texts to several family members about the shooting.
